Do You Need to Skill Up Cooking?
You certainly don’t need it to get to 70, and at that point, cooking isn’t really necessary. If you have The Burning Crusade however, this skill has been greatly buffed, so it’s worth having this secondary skill, and it’s a lot of fun.
There are other reasons to skill up cooking too.
For example, rogues will want the thistle tea that instantly restores some energy. Try on some egg nog for size, it can turn you into a reindeer or snowman and get you all boozed up at the same time. Besides, it’s part of the WoW experience to have 300 or 375 cooking, you get to do some additional quests, and the Burning Crusade offers powerful buffs from the food you cook. One of the best things, is that you can make extra gold from cooking the high level recipes (which are easy to obtain).
As a secondary skill that anyone can learn, there is no reason to not have cooking. And with this guide you’ll be able to skill it up very fast and get all the common recipes.
How To Cook Food
First you need to be at a fire. Most any fire will do, but if you can’t find one in the environment you need to make one. To make a fire you need Flint and Tinder and Simple Wood. The Flint and Tinder is never consumed so you only ever need one, but 1 x Simple Wood is used for every fire you make. They are very inexpensive to buy.
Once you have those two items in your inventory you use the Basic Campfire ability found on the general tab of your spell book. You have to train in cooking at a cooking trainer to have access to that ability. It takes 10 seconds to make a fire which lasts a few minutes.
When standing at the fire, bring up the cooking window from the general tab in your spellbook, choose the food you want to create and click the create button. That’s it. (You’ll of course need to get the necessary ingredients to cook that food first.)
This cooking guide uses a lot of vendor bought recipes, be prepared to travel a lot because you have to buy cooking recipes and farm meats,eggs etc. while you are leveling this profession. Updated for WoW patch 3.1
You will need a lot of spices later, so make sure to buy them before you go out for farm mobs, you can buy spices at every cooking or trade supplier.

First, visit any trainer in the main cities of old Azeroth – just ask a guard, and learn Apprentice Cooking.

60 x [Spice Bread] – 60 [Simple Flour], 60 Mild Spices

40 x [Smoked Bear Meat] – 40 [Bear Meat]
Usually where are bears, there are Wolfes too. Kill those and you can cook [Spiced Wolf Meat], also.
At 75, you have to visit your trainer in order to to learn Journeyman Cooking.
80 – 130
Learn Journeyman Cooking.

Go to Ashenvale, and head to the Zoram Strand, where the sea is (north-west).
[Boiled Clams] – 1 Clam Meat, 1 Refreshing Spring Water – clam meat can be found in Small Barnacled Clam
[Crab Cake] – 1 Crawler Meat, 1 Mild Spices
Alliance
Alliance players can buy this recipe too, because the Crawlers you will kill drops Crawler Claw too. Don’t sell the Crawler Claw!

Learn Expert Cooking.

The Raptors will drops [Raptor Flesh] also, don’t sell or destroy them, because you will need those in the next step of the Cooking guide. 50 x [Curiously Tasty Omelet] – 50 [Raptor Egg], 50 Hot Spices

Learn Artisan Cooking.

To get this cooking recipe, you have to complete a quest chain first.

Go to Outland and learn Cooking Master.

30 x [Ravager Dog] – 30 [Ravager Flesh]
or
30 x [Buzzard Bites] – 30 [Buzzard Meat]
You have to complete a quest chain for this cooking recipe.
1. Ravager Egg Roundup
2. Hellboar, the Other White Meat
3. Smooth as Butter

You have 3 choices now. I say, farming Talbuk Venison and Clefthoof Meat is a lot easier than the Warped Flesh, because they are both in Nagrand, but you might need the Warp Burger for raiding.
35 x [Talbuk Steak] – 35 [Talbuk Venison ]
35 x [Roasted Clefthoof] – 35 [Clefthoof Meat]
35 x [Warp Burger] – 35 [Warped Flesh]
350 – 450
Go to Northend and learn Cooking Grand Master.
• 350 – 365
Get the Northern Cooking quest and complete it. It requires 4 Chilled Meat. Completing this quest will teach you how to create [Northern Stew]
20 x [Northern Stew] – 20 Chilled Meat
• 365 – 400
The Cooking trainer will teach you a lot of recipes which will go green at 382 skill and gray at 415 skill. Any of these recipes are good for skilling up Cooking.
I recommend Rhino Dogs. There are a lot of Rhinos around Warsong Hold in Borean Tundra, and they respawn really quickly.
50 x [Rhino Dogs] – 50 [Rhino Meat]
• 400 – 425
Every cooking recipe beyond this point will be purchased with [Dalaran Cooking Awards], which are obtained by completing the daily cooking quest given by Katherine Lee (Alliance) or Awilo Lon’gomba (Horde). And you’re going to need them and a ton of Northern Spices to level past 425 skill.
You should cook the recipe that you will use for raiding. Choose one recipe from these, and make that until you reach 425. The recipes are sold by Derek Odds (Alliance) and Misensi (Horde).
• 425 – 450
[Gigantic Feast] or [Small Feast]. Both recipes are sold by the NPCs mentioned above.
